A femicide in the municipality of Ensenada, Baja California, led to the arrest and incarceration of Jonathan Paul Espinoza at the local Social Reintegration Center (CERESO). He is accused of murdering his romantic partner, Marlen Vázquez Saavedra, a 37-year-old environmental activist and real estate agent.
The incident took place on the morning of Thursday, September 17, 2026, inside the home the couple shared in the Ampliación Moderna neighborhood. According to the investigation by the Baja California State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), the man physically assaulted the victim following an argument, ultimately causing her death.
In an attempt to conceal the crime and stage a car accident, the perpetrator placed Vázquez Saavedra’s body inside her vehicle and drove along the Ensenada-Tijuana highway. Upon reaching the 3.6-kilometer mark, he drove the vehicle off a cliff.
Subsequently, the man went to the FGE offices to file a formal report regarding his partner’s alleged disappearance. However, the following day, authorities located the vehicle and the body in the ravine. An autopsy performed by the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) determined that the cause of death was mechanical asphyxia due to strangulation, ruling out the vehicle impact as the cause of death.
Analysis of video surveillance footage and forensic evidence gathered by the State Security Investigation Force (FESI) allowed authorities to refute the accused’s initial account. Based on the evidence included in the investigation file, a supervisory judge issued the corresponding arrest warrant.
Agents from the FGE executed the court order and arrested Jonathan Paul Espinoza in the Popular 89 neighborhood, immediately placing him at the disposal of judicial authorities so that his legal status regarding the crime of femicide could be determined.
