The U.S. Department of the Treasury has sanctioned Jesús Raymundo Ramos Vázquez, president of the Nuevo Laredo Human Rights Committee, after accusing him of using an activist façade to collaborate with the Northeast Cartel.
The U.S. government, through the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), alleged that Ramos had led a disinformation campaign for over a decade to protect the criminal group’s public image, file false complaints against the Mexican military, pay individuals to participate in protests, and defend exclusively violent members of the cartel.
U.S. authorities described him as an “employee” of the Northeast Cartel, noting that his objective was to discredit the actions of Mexican authorities and improve public perception of the criminal organization.
In an interview with Javier Risco on Radio Fórmula, Raymundo Ramos asserted that his work is not subject to the approval of any government and that the accusations issued by the United States are incomplete and erroneous.
