A nurse who assisted the young woman who died after being thrown from a bridge during a rope jump in Brazil confirmed that the victim still showed vital signs after falling from a height of approximately 40 meters.
Rayza Gabrieli Dias Delfino, who was waiting her turn to jump, descended to where Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas had fallen and found that she still had a pulse. Upon seeing this, she said, she began CPR.
“She was taking that last breath before death… I picked her up, checked her, and she had a very weak pulse. I started CPR, and it stopped,” she stated.
According to her, accessing the spot where the 21-year-old victim was located involved descending a steep slope in adverse conditions. “My whole hand was scraped because there’s a very steep slope and only one rope to get down,” Dias told Record.
She added, “It was all covered in mud. I kept going down, down, we walked the whole way.”
While assisting her, the nurse noticed that the victim had a harness attached to her abdomen, although it wasn’t connected to the main cable of the rope jumping system.
During the intervention, she also tried to maintain contact with the young woman while she performed the maneuvers. “I even spoke to her. I have a habit of joking and saying, ‘Nobody dies on my shift.’ And I told her, ‘Duda (a nickname I gave her), nobody dies on my shift,’ even though I wasn’t on duty there at the time.
Prior to the accident, the nurse was at the location to participate in the same activity. She indicated that she was the 42nd person on the list that day and had begun recording the preparations for the jump on her cell phone.
“I was going to send it to my aunt… I couldn’t hear [what they were saying] because I was about to jump… I was just watching her, I didn’t even see how they were setting things up… When she fell, I started hearing everyone saying, ‘The rope, the rope,’” she recounted.
The incident occurred on Saturday when Rodrigues de Freitas was attempting a bungee jump in the town of Limeira, in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. She was thrown into the void by employees of the extreme sports company offering the service, amidst screams from other tourists who… They warned that the woman did not have the required safety harness or rope.
The entire sequence of the jump preparation and the moment the young woman was thrown into the void were captured on video by her boyfriend and other young people who were preparing to jump, and the videos went viral on social media.
The victim was studying sports management in physical education and lived in the town of Jandira, also in the state of São Paulo.
