Security authorities in Baja California found a body on Friday in a parking lot across from Estadio Caliente, where the Iranian national team holds its daily training sessions, in the city of Tijuana, on the border with the United States. The body, which showed signs of violence and was wrapped in a black bag, was found in the trunk of an abandoned SUV in a supermarket parking lot. Although the investigation is ongoing, local authorities have been quick to assure that this incident is not related to either the Iranian team or the World Cup, one of whose host cities is Mexico.
Media outlets in Baja California, citing AFP, report that authorities inspected the vehicle because it had been parked at the supermarket for two days. Upon approaching, they detected a smell of decomposition, which mobilized local police and the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE). After the discovery of the body, the area was cordoned off for evidence collection. The vehicle had California license plates. It has not been determined whether the body is that of a man or a woman.
