On Saturday, August 1, the Mexican Army arrested Alfonso Fernández Magallón—alias “Poncho” or “La Quiringua”—in Michoacán. He had been identified by U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) as the leader of the Los Reyes Cartel, a faction of the Cárteles Unidos alliance in Michoacán.

“Poncho” was wanted in Mexico on charges of unlawful deprivation of liberty and rioting. Additionally, the U.S. government had offered a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to his capture, stemming from various drug trafficking charges he faces in the United States.

The arrest was confirmed this evening by the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, via his X account.
