María de Jesús Quijada Maldonado, a Morena party councilwoman for the Tecate City Council, is out of danger following an armed attack she and her husband suffered on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 14, in Baja California. This update was confirmed by her father, Francisco Quijada, who refuted reports circulating for several hours that claimed she had died.

In an interview with Milenio Televisión, Francisco Quijada stated that her medical progress has been positive. “Thank God, my daughter is out of danger. And, well, my granddaughter is too. This information I’ve just received is all I can share, and I want to thank everyone for their prayers and good vibes.”

So far, municipal and state authorities have not disclosed a motive for the attack, nor have any arrests been reported.

According to preliminary information, the attack took place on Coyuca Street in the Hacienda de Tecate neighborhood, when armed men intercepted the black Kia in which María Quijada, her husband Jesús Pereida Ruiz, and their daughter were traveling.

The attackers fired multiple shots and then fled in a white vehicle. The councilwoman sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to a hospital in the United States for specialized medical care.
