Apolonio Álvarez Montes, who served as mayor of Igualapa, Guerrero, was shot and killed. The attack occurred on the morning of June 28 in San Juan de los Llanos.
Initial reports indicate that he was attacked while traveling in a pickup truck. His death was confirmed on social media by the Church of San Juan de los Llanos.
“With great sadness, we offer our most sincere condolences to the family of our brother in faith, who unconditionally supported this dream come true,” reads part of the message posted on their Facebook page.
Images of the attack, showing bullet holes in the vehicle, were also shared on social media. Following the attack, security forces were deployed to the area, but so far, no arrests have been reported in connection with the incident.
