Nearly six years after one of the worst tragedies to occur in Veracruz, a federal judge found Edgar Zamora Martínez—alias “El Negro Zamora”—guilty. He was identified as the mastermind behind the attack on the Caballo Blanco bar in Coatzacoalcos, which resulted in at least 29 deaths and injuries to ten others.
The ruling was issued by District Judge Conrado Vallarta Esquivel during a hearing at the Federal Criminal Justice Center in Coatzacoalcos. The proceedings established Zamora Martínez’s responsibility for planning and ordering the attack, which took place on the night of August 27, 2019.
Although the guilty verdict has been handed down, the specific sentence the accused must serve for these crimes will not be announced until Thursday, June 18.
The Caballo Blanco case became a symbol of the violence that has plagued Veracruz in recent years, leaving a deep scar on the state’s society due to the magnitude of the tragedy and the brutality of the attack.
A key element of the trial was the testimony of a protected witness known as “Marcus,” who stated that Edgar Zamora Martínez held a command position within the criminal organization responsible for the attack.
According to his testimony, the criminal structure also included Adán “N” (alias “El Gato”) and Leonardo “N” (alias “El Verde”), who allegedly received direct orders to coordinate the assault.
