According to reporting by Debate following Mexico’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, national team coach Javier Aguirre offered a candidacy assessment of his squad after their 2–0 victory over South Africa at the Estadio Azteca.
While the result gave Mexico its first opening-match win in a World Cup after several unsuccessful attempts, Aguirre reportedly admitted that not everything pleased him. Looking back on the first half, he said some players appeared overwhelmed by the magnitude of the occasion.
