Following the controversial send-off event for the Colombian National Team—held alongside the government—Antonella Petro, the youngest daughter of President Gustavo Petro, posted a video on social media to send a message of unwavering support for the national squad and, specifically, its captain, James Rodríguez.
The video was released just hours after the Colombian Football Federation (FCF) issued a statement defending the players amidst a wave of criticism and speculation on social media regarding the squad’s alleged behavior during the official ceremony.
The controversy stemmed from an event at the Colombian Aerospace Force airbase in Bogotá, where the president presented the national flag to the delegation during a symbolic ceremony, addressing the selected players and their coaching staff.
Social media users quickly circulated footage of the players’ brief greetings to the president—and, in particular, a moment where the midfielder from Cúcuta appeared to ignore a request for a photo from the 17-year-old. Amidst the ensuing uproar, Antonella decided to clarify the situation, share her account of the encounter, and send a message to the entire country.
In the video, the youngest Petro addressed the footballer directly to express the strong connection she feels toward his athletic career. “This video is for James Rodríguez… Just kidding, it’s for everyone,” the young woman began, introducing herself to the audience: “I’m Antonella, I’m 17 years old, and I’m the Colombian National Team’s number one fan.”
