The Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Pedro Velasco, presented a series of statistics this Tuesday at the morning press conference that reframe the debate on the extradition process between Mexico and the United States, and which highlight a bilateral practice that, according to the official, has been ignored in public analysis.
According to the official data presented, from January 1, 2018, to May 13, 2016, Mexico submitted 269 extradition requests to the United States. To date, none have been granted.
The most revealing statistic from the presentation was the following: in 47 of those 50 requests for provisional arrest, the United States government required Mexico to submit additional information before proceeding.
Velasco emphasized that requesting supplementary information in an extradition process is not an extraordinary practice nor contrary to the bilateral Treaty, but quite the opposite: it is the standard that both countries have applied reciprocally for years.
