The arrest of Sergio “El Checo,” carried out this Wednesday in the rural areas of Tecate, Baja California, represents a direct blow to the operational structure of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). State intelligence sources indicate that this blow comes at a time of critical vulnerability for the organization, stemming from the internal reconfiguration following the death of its founder, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes “El Mencho.”
The arrest was the culmination of an intense 30-kilometer chase on the highway toward Ensenada. Driving a Jeep Rubicon reported stolen in the United States, the suspect attempted to evade the State Citizen Security Force (FESC) using assault rifles and scattering tire spikes, ultimately losing control of the vehicle and crashing into a tree.
Sergio’s criminal record, at age 51, exemplifies the constantly shifting alliances in drug trafficking along the northern border. His trajectory reflects an evolution based on tactical expediency: Drug Trafficking News
2016: Initially apprehended as an operative for the Arellano Félix Cartel, a time when he was collaborating with factions of the Sinaloa Cartel.
2026: Fully identified as a plaza boss for the CJNG, leading the cell known as “Los Volteados” (The Turncoats), made up of Sinaloa defectors who decided to align themselves with the interests of Jalisco.
This phenomenon of defection and switching sides has been the main driver of violence in strategic locations such as Cerro Azul and Nueva Colonia Hindú, areas contested street by street due to their importance for the trafficking of methamphetamine into California.
The arrest of “El Checo” coincides with a scenario of fragmentation within the CJNG leadership. Without the unifying figure of their historical leader, the regional cells face a double pressure: the offensive by authorities and incursions by rival groups. In fact, local reports indicate that the now-indicted individual had recently survived several attacks perpetrated by former allies seeking to oust him from control of Tecate.
After securing the individual at the crash site, state agents seized military equipment that confirms his high level of danger:
-CJNG Analysis
-Two long guns (assault rifles).
-Two handguns.
-Tactical vests and hundreds of rounds of ammunition of various calibers.
Designated by the Baja California government as a priority “generator of violence,” Sergio “N’s” role was to secure the land routes connecting the interior of the state with the border crossings and to impede the advance of rival organizations.
Currently, the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) is prosecuting the individual for attempted homicide and possession of firearms restricted to the military. Police presence remains in the Tecate area due to possible reprisals or internal disputes over leadership within the “Los Volteados” group.
