FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated that he has “full confidence in Mexico” to host the 2026 World Cup, which has matches scheduled in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, despite the violence that has erupted in the country.
“We are analyzing and monitoring the situation in Mexico these days, at this moment, but I want to say from the outset that we have full confidence in Mexico, in its president (Claudia) Sheinbaum, in the authorities, and we are convinced that everything will go as smoothly as possible,” Infantino stated at a press conference in Barranquilla, Colombia.
Last Sunday in Jalisco, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, led to an outbreak of violence in Mexico that raised concerns abroad, with questions about whether the country can guarantee security during the World Cup.
