“We are very sad and worried. Everything that’s happening is a disgrace to my family. The only thing I can say is that they wouldn’t even let a dog die like this, like they let my son die,” María Leticia Vargas, the mother of Lorenzo Antonio Batrez Vargas, said with grief exclusively with Univision Arizona.
Batrez Vargas, 32, died on August 31 while in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Florence Correctional Complex, where he arrived on August 10.
In a statement, ICE indicated that the Mexican citizen, originally from Durango, died while receiving medical care at Mountain Vista Medical Center. However, the family questions the treatment given to “Lenchito,” as they affectionately called their relative, after he contracted COVID-19.

María Leticia Vargas says she spent “about 12 days sick, with chemotherapy and everything. A mother always waits for her… her children’s call, always early.” Unfortunately, when the call that would end the uncertainty came, it was to inform her that her son had died.
