The cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel’s popular late-night show due to the host’s comments about Charlie Kirk, the ultra-conservative activist murdered last week, has also left Mexican comedian Guillermo Rodríguez, who was part of the show, out of work.
ABC announced Wednesday that it will indefinitely remove the popular show, which has aired since 2003, from its programming.
“The MAGA gang desperately tried to paint this kid (Tyler Robinson) who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything but one of them, and he was doing everything he could for political gain,” Kimmel said Monday night. The comedian mocked the impact Kirk’s death had on President Donald Trump and aired a clip recorded last week in which a reporter asked the president how he was dealing with the murder. He replied, “I think very well,” and then went directly to commenting on the construction of the new White House ballroom.
Rodríguez, 54, a native of Zacatecas, Mexico, had been playing Hispanic immigrant characters with basic English on the show for two decades, where he gained significant airtime.
Over the years, the Mexican comedian’s fresh take on the characters has captivated interviewees like famed businesswoman Kim Kardashian.
Rodríguez also took on the show’s official red carpet interviewer in 2011. Before joining the show, the Mexican worked as a studio security guard and had at least one other job.
Rodríguez was caught sleeping in a producer’s vehicle after hours, but instead of being fired, he was brought back on the show, becoming Kimmel’s constant companion.
