Written by Parriva — August 18, 2025

A gunman burst into the patron saint festival in the Infonavit Malanquín neighborhood on Sunday night, opening fire on attendees, leaving 19 victims: two dead and 17 injured.

The attack occurred shortly before midnight on Monday, during a celebration of the Virgin of San Juan de los Lagos.

Neighbors reported the shots to the 911 Emergency System, so Municipal Police officers responded immediately and secured the area, while paramedics transported the injured to various hospitals in the city.

The Guanajuato State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) and its prosecutors responded to gather evidence and begin initial investigations.

Witnesses indicated that a man armed with a long weapon was allegedly responsible for the attack.

Municipal authorities described the attack as “cowardly” and assured that they will strengthen security operations in the municipality.

This attack adds to a string of massacres that occurred during community celebrations in Guanajuato during 2025:

June 24, Irapuato: an armed group attacked a gathering, leaving at least 10 people dead and several injured, during the San Juan festivities.

March 18, San José de Mendoza (Salamanca): members of a parish group were attacked; 8 people died and 6 more were injured.

May 19, San Bartolo de Berrios (San Felipe): seven parishioners were murdered in the main square during Mother’s Day celebrations.

The events in question are being investigated by the specialized homicide investigation unit, although no arrests have yet been made.
