The Mexico City government announced yesterday the installation of three new recreational marijuana use zones, known as 4:20 zones. These zones aim to create spaces of tolerance for individual consumption, responsible and in compliance with the law.
“The goal is to prevent other types of crimes from occurring in these spaces; that is, to guarantee spaces and places that comply with the rules and do not become a problem,” explained Mayor Clara Brugada.
This comes after two cannabis use camps were removed last Monday following several citizen complaints. During the removal, authorities established a dialogue with the groups gathered there and their relocation was achieved.
Where will the authorized recreational marijuana use zones be?
The Mexico City government announced that the marijuana consumption spots will be located at:
*Plaza de la Concepción, located on Belisario Domínguez Street, near the corner of Eje Central Lázaro Cárdenas, in the Centro neighborhood.
*Plaza de Lectura José Saramago, at the intersection of Circuito Interior and Paseo de la Reforma.
*Monumento a Simón Bolívar, at the intersection of Paseo de la Reforma and Violeta Street, in the Guerrero neighborhood.
Additionally, it indicated that the spot outside the Senate of the Republic will remain for informational purposes only, but will not be accessible for consumption. Consumption hours in these areas will be from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. For adults, there will be a maximum of 80 people at each spot, and the maximum permitted stay will be 40 minutes per person.
Government Secretary César Cravioto Romero emphasized that an agreement was signed with three groups to ensure that marijuana sales and exchanges are not permitted in these spaces, and that the use of other substances will not be permitted, nor will it disturb passersby in these areas.
