US President Donald Trump has stated that he is “not seeking” a third term in the 2028 elections, and has pointed to his Vice President JD Vance and his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, as possible successors.
“I’m going to be an eight-year president. I’m going to be a two-term president. I’ve always thought that’s very important,” Trump said in an NBC interview recorded Friday in Florida and published Sunday. “It’s something that’s not allowed, as far as I know. I don’t know if it’s for constitutional reasons or something else,” he added.
In March, Trump himself said he was “not joking” when speculating about the possibility of a third term and asserted that many of his allies had asked him to run again. Shortly after, the Trump Organization, run by two of his sons, began selling caps with the slogan Trump 2028.
“There are a lot of people selling the 2028 cap, but it’s not something I’m looking for. I want to have four great years and hand over to someone, a great Republican, I hope, who will carry on (…). I think four years is enough time to do something truly spectacular,” he explained.
