Greenland Rejects US “Foreign Interference”

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, accused Washington this Monday (March 24, 2025) of interfering in its political affairs with a US delegation’s visit this week to the Danish territory, coveted by US President Donald Trump.

“It must be emphasized that our integrity and our democracy must be respected without any foreign interference,” he wrote on Facebook.

Egede specified that there will be “no meetings” with the delegation, which, he said, includes US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Usha Vance, the wife of US Vice President J.D. Vance.

The White House announced on Sunday that the official delegation will be in Greenland from Thursday to Saturday to attend a sled dog race and visit a US military base.

“Americans have been clearly informed that meetings can only take place once the new government” takes office, following the recent midterm elections, Egede added.

Since the defeat of his left-wing party, Egede has led Greenland on an interim basis, pending the formation of a new government. His likely successor, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, leader of the center-right party that won the election, recently called Trump’s comments about his desire to annex Greenland “inappropriate.”

Without ruling out the use of force, the Republican tycoon has repeatedly reiterated his desire to seize this territory, considered important for US security against Russia and China.

Covered in 80% ice, this vast Arctic island of 57,000 inhabitants, almost 90% of them Inuit, possesses hydrocarbons and minerals important for the energy transition.
