California Governor Gavin Newsom joined calls this weekend for council members involved in the racist recording scandal to resign.
Nury Martinez, the president of the city council, was forced to resign, after the Los Angeles Times published said recordings, carried out in a union hall, where the three councilors expressed racist comments against other ethnic groups. from the city.
This caused a stir both locally and nationally. Even the country’s president, Joe Biden, spoke in favor of the resignation.
“I was very clear with (former Council President Nury Martinez) that she did the right thing, and I think the others should do the same. I wanted to provide the opportunity for them to justify … what they said and the opportunity to be transparent about what they said,” Newsom said. “So we’re hoping and looking forward to announcements soon.”
Both de León and Cedillo were removed from various committee assignments last week, leaving the vital Homelessness and Poverty, and Housing committees without chairs.
De Leon has expressed his intention not to resign despite public pressure.
