In Ciudad Guzmán (municipality of Zapotlán el Grande, Jalisco), authorities are investigating the murder of 57-year-old lawyer Camilo Novoa López—brother of a former Jalisco Secretary of Finance—following a stabbing attack in the Lomas de San Cayetano neighborhood.
Investigations conducted by the Jalisco Regional Prosecutor’s Office establish that the attack took place at 9:00 PM on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.
The victim was driving a gray Ford Territory along Antonio Rosales Street—specifically the stretch between Cuauhtémoc and Alfredo Velasco streets—when another car intentionally cut him off. A group of approximately eight men, several with their faces covered, then stepped out of the vehicle.
During the incident, the attackers forced a woman riding in the front passenger seat out of the car and held her down on the ground while assaulting the lawyer with sharp objects; they also took the woman’s cell phone and handbag.
Upon inspecting the scene, forensic personnel documented more than 20 stab wounds on the back of the vest Novoa López was wearing.
Evidence collected for processing and inclusion in the investigation file included a knife with its sheath, a footprint found on the street, and various ballistic and field-recovered items. The lines of investigation pursued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office are assessing whether the crime is directly linked to the professional’s work and the legal cases he handled, without ruling out hypotheses involving a personal motive or robbery.
The deceased was a close relative of Ignacio Novoa, a former public official who headed the Jalisco State Secretariat of Finance during the administration of Francisco Ramírez Acuña and later served as Director General of the Jalisco State Pension Institute (IPEJAL).
