In response to the latest attack by U.S. President Donald Trump—who, during his speech at the UN General Assembly, claimed it is difficult to share a border with a country controlled by cartels—President Claudia Sheinbaum stated: “I could also say it is difficult living next to a country with such high drug consumption, or one that produces so many weapons; but I won’t say that, because we have a good relationship.”
She noted that the media had focused on only one part of Trump’s speech, overlooking other remarks in which he highlighted Mexico’s level of cooperation on security matters.
Sheinbaum chose to respond with irony to Trump’s claims, without dwelling further on the subject.
Later, when pressed with questions about Trump’s UN statements, she remarked that the U.S. leader faces an election in November and—like many members of Congress—uses Mexico as a campaign issue. Her response, however, is: “You should focus on the problems within the United States and respect our sovereignty.”
At the same time, the goal is not to be constantly at odds with Trump.
She highlighted the good collaboration and progress made in security coordination, always adhering to four established principles—including respect for sovereignty and mutual trust.
