Elvis Guerra, one of the designers who created the outfit worn by President Claudia Sheinbaum for the recent Independence Day “Grito” ceremony, has called for the President’s intervention regarding the insecurity and violence plaguing Juchitán de Zaragoza, a municipality in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region of Oaxaca.
The Muxe designer and poet reported that yesterday, his physical safety—and that of his family—was targeted in an attack. He stated that he has been subjected to threats and extortion attempts since opening an event venue.
“Recently, we went viral on social media for dressing the country’s president in the beautiful traditional attire we create in Juchitán. Today, I am making this video to ask Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, for help, because I have been the target of threats and extortion. Yesterday, there was an attack on my physical safety and that of my family.
“They fired shots at our home and intimidated us; we have faced constant threats for having opened an event venue,” he stated in a video shared on his social media channels.
Elvis Guerra was part of the team that designed and crafted the dress worn by President Claudia Sheinbaum on September 15 during the Independence Day ceremony.
“I ask you, Madam President, to please turn your attention to the people of Juchitán. We need you to intervene, because—just like me—there are countless victims who have had to flee Juchitán out of fear, and fear of reporting what is happening,” he said.
He also demanded that Governor Salomón Jara Cruz address the situation in Juchitán de Zaragoza.
“We want peace, we want to live in tranquility, and above all, we want to stay alive. Today, I speak for myself and for all the people of Juchitán who are calling for justice.”
