Miguel Ángel Beraza Villa, known as ‘La Troca,’ one of the main leaders of the La Familia Michoacana cartel, was handed over to Mexico by the United States government and held at the Federal Social Reintegration Center Number 17 in Buenavista, Tomatlán, Michoacán.
Once imprisoned, a Federal Court admitted his appeal seeking recognition of innocence and the annulment of the 20-year prison sentence imposed on him.
In November 2024, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) handed him over to the United States because the Federal Court for the Northern District of Texas wanted him for the alleged crimes of criminal association, public health violations, and money laundering.
On July 1 of this year, the Americans handed him over to Mexico, and that same day he was taken to the aforementioned federal prison.
This is reflected in a file from the First Collegiate Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, which states that it has admitted La Troca’s request to determine whether to recognize his innocence and, consequently, whether to overturn the conviction. A ruling will be issued in the coming months.
