Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the incident, with many Angelenos horrified by vandalism act.
“That someone would do this is truly beyond comprehension. City public works crews are assessing the damage and we will be making plans to quickly replace these damaged trees. LAPD has opened an investigation into what happened and those responsible must be held accountable,” said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass in a statement.
Trees were cut along 1st Street and Wilshire Boulevard, Grand Ave., 5th Street, Olympic, Hope, Broadway, Cesar Chavez Avenue.
The trees, some of them drought resistant Indian Laurel Figs, appeared to have been cut with a chainsaw.
Police have not reported any arrests, but describe the alleged suspect as someone dressed in black and riding a BMX-style bicycle.
On Monday, crews began to clear the debris left by whoever cut the trees, as many are asking the same thing a commentator asked on Instagram, “Who the hell would do something like this?”
