The Mexican has captivated the world of cinema with his interpretation of the classic Pinocchio.
Until now, it has taken all the prizes that the festivals have awarded. And it is almost certain that he will take an Oscar this Sunday.
It is Guillermo del Toro himself who accounts for the stop-motion animation technique that was used.
In a didactic way he expands on how the puppets were built and filmed manually manipulating each one of them, to create the world of Pinocchio that he had imagined. It is a very careful and patient artisan work that involves moving the puppets in each of the shots, to obtain the desired position.
Before, actors are filmed performing the same scenes, to see the reality of the movement in humans and then bring these to the puppets.
It is intended that the movements are not an invention or creation of the animator, but reproduce those made by real people. In the documentary you can see the work that was done to make the puppets, particularly that of Pinocchio, which is made of wood, of which different sizes were made for the different needs of the filming.
Del Toro affirms that animation is an art form and not just a genre and that stop-motion is “the most sacred and magical, because it is the link between an animator and the puppet”.
