With special security teams and drones, they seek to protect Mexico City for the 2026 World Cup

The Mexico City Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC) will form new special teams for explosive detection and high-precision snipers. It will also acquire drones and anti-drone equipment to protect the upcoming 2026 World Cup, in which the country’s capital will be one of three Mexican venues.

Reports from the Mexico City police, obtained by MILENIO, detail that this is part of the 2026 Security Action Plan, in which the Metropolitan Special Operations Unit (UMOE) will be in charge of forming these teams to protect the World Cup, as it is the elite unit of the corporation.

The documents state that the General Directorate of Immediate Reaction and Intervention Operations, to which the UMOE is attached, will be responsible for integrating specialized teams for explosive detection, high-precision snipers, and canine teams.

In addition, tactical equipment such as drones and anti-drone weapons has been purchased to strengthen the response to potential threats in the vicinity of the Azteca Stadium, now known as the Banorte Stadium, which will host five World Cup matches, including the opening ceremony on June 11 of next year.
