‘We continue seeking justice’: Family of Mexican man killed in raid

The family of Mexican Jaime Alanís García, who died on July 12 after falling approximately nine meters while trying to escape an immigration raid in Ventura County, California, raised $167,986 (3.2 million Mexican pesos) by closing the donation account on the GoFundMe platform yesterday.

The goal is to return the body of the Michoacan native to Huajúmbaro, in the municipality of Zinapécuaro, carry out his burial, and support his wife and daughter, who were his financial dependents.
The loved ones of the Glass House Farms farmworker launched this campaign to lay him to rest and, at the same time, demand justice, said his niece Yesenia Durán.

Jaime was working on a cannabis farm when an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid occurred; He tried to hide on top of a structure when officers arrived on the scene on the morning of Thursday, July 10.

After the fall, the Michoacán native was taken to a hospital, where he was declared brain dead. Two days later, his family decided to withdraw the life support that was keeping his heart beating.

MICHOACÁN FOLLOWS UP

The governor of Michoacán, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, reported that, through the Mexican consul in Oxnard, Ricardo Santana Velázquez, they are in contact with Jaime’s family to provide legal support for the repatriation of the body and/or to file a complaint.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry is supporting Jaime’s family through the External Legal Advisory Program (PALE) to ensure respect for their rights.
