US Embassy Updates Travel Advisory for Mexico: Urges Shelter-in-Place and Restricts Personnel Movement

The US Embassy in Mexico issued a third update to its security alert, recommending that its citizens and diplomatic personnel remain sheltered in place due to the series of operations, roadblocks, and acts of violence reported across large areas of the country following the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The recommendation applies to both travelers and US residents in Mexico.

The updated alert, released on the evening of Sunday, February 22, indicates that the security operations and roadblocks have impacted 20 states in Mexico.
