The mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo, was killed in an armed attack while holding a public event for the Day of the Dead in the municipality. Two people were arrested in connection with the incident, and one attacker was killed.
According to initial reports, the attack occurred at the end of the opening ceremony of the Candle Festival. A civilian and one of the mayor’s bodyguards were seriously injured.
Carlos Manzo was shot and taken to a hospital for medical attention; however, despite medical efforts, he died.
The downtown area of Uruapan, where the festival was taking place, was evacuated. Security forces from all three levels of government arrived at the scene.
“Following an attack this afternoon in downtown Uruapan, Michoacán, where Mayor Carlos Manzo tragically lost his life, two people involved in the incident have been arrested, and one of the assailants was killed,” the security cabinet reported via social media, assuring that the crime will not go unpunished.
