Two officials from the U.S. Embassy in Mexico—who died in a car accident while returning from an anti-drug operation in the northern part of the country—were working for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), *The Washington Post* reported this Tuesday, citing two people with knowledge of the matter.
The diplomats were serving the CIA as part of a broader effort to combat narcotics trafficking in the Western Hemisphere, the report noted. The intelligence agency declined to comment on the incident, the publication added.
U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson announced Sunday night that two embassy employees died in a car accident on April 18, alongside two Mexican law enforcement officials—one of whom was the Director of the State Investigation Agency for the state of Chihuahua.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that federal authorities had not been notified regarding the work of the U.S. Embassy employees in that jurisdiction.
