Two Mexican brothers are being held at the dreaded Alligator Alcatraz prison in Florida, United States. This was confirmed by the Mexican consul in the city, Juan Sabines, who met with the young men’s father to support him and assign him a legal representative to handle the case.
In a social media post documenting his meeting with Martín González, the diplomatic representative also reported the possible violation of the civil rights of the two Mexican brothers who were detained and transferred to the detention center after committing a traffic violation in Orlando.
“Following instructions from President Claudia Sheinbaum, the Mexican Consulate in Orlando assigned legal representation to PALE attorney Andrea Reyes, a member of AILA. During a call, the attorney warned us about potential civil rights violations against both Mexicans, since the prison where they are being held does not belong to the federal government (ICE), but to the state of Florida. Therefore, they do not yet have an “alien” or case number, preventing them from accessing adequate defense and a fair trial,” Sabines wrote.
