A federal judge issued a formal arrest warrant for Tomás Yarrington Ruvalcaba, former governor of Tamaulipas, for his alleged involvement in the crime of operations with illicit proceeds. The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) suspects he acquired assets in the country and abroad with drug money.
According to the FGR, the former governor is believed to have had ties to the Gulf Cartel during and after his term, and likely received funds used to purchase three properties inside and outside the country.
On April 9, US authorities deported Tomás Yarrington. He was subsequently sentenced to prison in a separate case for crimes against public health involving aiding and abetting drug trafficking.
He is currently incarcerated in the Altiplano maximum-security prison in the State of Mexico.
The criminal cases he faces are part of the old penal system.
