Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, 41—a veteran of six World Cups—announced his retirement this Tuesday via a video posted on his social media channels.
“I gave it my all. I left it all on the field—for my clubs and for the national team—and today I hang up my gloves. Football chose me to defend the goal, the badge, and the hopes of an entire nation, but before that, my family took care of me; they were my first team,” said the Club América academy product in a video featuring highlights of his greatest achievements.
“Being a goalkeeper means knowing you might spend 90 minutes waiting, because there may be just one instant where everything depends on you, and when that moment arrives, you cannot hesitate. My gloves were never just gloves; they were a promise to step up when I was needed most,” he added.
Ochoa was one of the few Mexican goalkeepers to try his luck in Europe, where he played for Ajaccio in France, Málaga and Granada in Spain, and Standard Liège in Belgium. However, his truly historic moments came while wearing the Mexican national team jersey.
“I cannot imagine my career without the national team, because that is where I understood the true magnitude of this responsibility. Perhaps that is why destiny willed for everything to come full circle where it began: at the Azteca Stadium. The very place that opened the door for me is now helping me close it with gratitude. The time has come to take off these gloves and, for the first time, leave them in other hands,” he concluded.
