These are the dates of the next hearings for Mexican drug traffickers in the US

The coming weeks will be crucial for several high-profile Mexican drug traffickers who will face legal proceedings in federal courts in the United States.

Judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys are preparing for an unusually busy schedule of hearings that could determine sentences, collaboration agreements, or decisions on the imposition of the death penalty.

Treviño Morales Brothers

Miguel Ángel Treviño Morales (El Z-40) and Omar Treviño Morales (El Z-42), former leaders of the criminal group Los Zetas, will appear in Federal Court in Washington, D.C., on June 11. Both face charges for drug trafficking, money laundering, illegal use of weapons, and continuing criminal enterprise.

Surrendered to the United States outside the traditional extradition framework, they are subject to the possibility of the death penalty. They are represented by at least seven lawyers, including Frank Pérez, known for representing high-profile drug lords. His lawyers are reportedly seeking an agreement to avoid both trial and the death penalty.

Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada

June 16

The long-time leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García, is scheduled for a hearing on June 16 before Judge Brian Cogan in the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

The prosecution and defense—also led by Frank Pérez—confirmed that they are still negotiating a plea deal, with a view to withdrawing the possibility of the death penalty. The proceedings are on hold to allow for these talks.

Mexico, for its part, has requested the US return of Zambada García, stating that he faces three outstanding arrest warrants. His extradition to the United States occurred on July 25, 2024, allegedly facilitated by his godson, Joaquín Guzmán López, son of El Chapo.

Vicente Carrillo Fuentes

Date: June 22

Former Juárez Cartel leader Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, alias El Viceroy, will appear on June 22 before Judge Joan M. Azrack in the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of New York. At the last hearing, it was confirmed that he is in negotiations with prosecutors to plead guilty and avoid trial and the harshest penalties, including the death penalty.

Carrillo faces seven charges, including drug trafficking, money laundering, continuing criminal enterprise, and illegal use of weapons. He was handed over to the United States in February 2025 along with 29 other drug lords under national security pretexts.
