The US revokes the visas of Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar and her husband

On the evening of Saturday, May 10, both Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda and her husband, Carlos Torres, announced through their official Facebook accounts that the United States (US) government had revoked their tourist visas.

So far, US authorities have not publicly disclosed the reasons for this decision.

Carlos Torres, a 49-year-old lawyer, is currently a member of Morena (Nationalist National Regeneration Movement) and serves as head of strategic projects in Mexicali and Tijuana within the state government, headed by his wife.

Throughout his political career, he has also been a member of the National Action Party (PAN), where he served as a youth leader, a federal deputy from 2006 to 2009, and a local deputy from 2016 to 2019.

In his post, Torres stated that the revocation was an administrative measure by the State Department, which does not imply any accusation, investigation, or legal action. He announced that he has begun consultations with a specialist in international immigration law to reverse the decision or apply for a new visa.

He also lamented that this situation had affected his wife, whom he described as strong and calm in the face of the consequences.

It should be noted that, in May 2024, reports circulated that Carlos Torres had been detained while crossing the border, allegedly for money laundering. However, this information was never confirmed, and days later he reappeared publicly, denying the story at the end of an official event.

Now, a year later, both he and the state governor’s visas have been revoked.
