The alert followed the arrest of Alfonso Fernández Magallón—alias “Poncho” or “La Quiringua”—which triggered road blockades and vehicle fires in the Los Reyes and Peribán region; these actions were attributed to members of the Los Reyes Cartel.
The diplomatic mission warned that local security forces remained on alert and noted reports of blockades and criminal activity in the state that carried a risk of escalation. The advisory reminded U.S. citizens that the State Department’s warning for Michoacán remained at the highest level: “Do Not Travel.”
The incident occurred after the Mexican Army arrested Alfonso Fernández Magallón in Michoacán on Saturday, August 1. Mexican authorities identified him as a leader of the Los Reyes Cartel, a faction that was part of the *Cárteles Unidos* (United Cartels) alliance in the state.
