The U.S. Embassy in Mexico issued a forceful post on its Instagram account stating that it will deny visas to foreign parents seeking birth tourism; that is, those who want to travel to the United States so their child can be born there and obtain U.S. citizenship.

It also stated that it will detain tourists who want to use their visas to “abuse” the country’s immigration system.

“U.S. consular officers are detaining foreign visitors who abuse the U.S. immigration system through ‘birth tourism.’ If a visa applicant is trying to use a tourist visa for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States to obtain citizenship for their child, their visa will be denied,” the Embassy post states.

In addition, the State Department added: “It is unacceptable for foreign parents to use a tourist visa with the primary purpose of giving birth in the U.S. to obtain citizenship for their child. Based on immigration law, U.S. consular officers reject these visa applications.”
