During their performance at the Palenque of the San Marcos Fair, Grupo Firme found themselves in a tense situation with their audience, flatly refusing to perform narcocorridos and corridos, despite their fans’ insistent requests.
The group offered a nearly three-hour show that initially generated great enthusiasm among the audience. However, the atmosphere changed at the end of the concert, when the audience began chanting “another, another,” hoping for more music from the band, such as music that glorifies crime.
Eduin Caz, the group’s vocalist, assured them that they would remain on stage to please their fans, at which point the demand for one song in particular intensified: “Se fue La Pantera,” a song that, as previously reported, had been removed from their repertoire. A video that quickly went viral on social media captured the reaction of Eduin Caz, lead singer of Grupo Firme, to the audience’s insistence. Caz rejected the request and asked his followers for understanding, explaining that there were rules that must be followed.
He said, “I would like to, but it’s not possible. You know that the rules are the rules and you have to follow them,” referring to then-presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum’s initiative to promote violence-free music and the controversy that Los Alegres del Barranco started by praising El Mencho of the CJNG (National Youth Communist Party) during a performance at the Telmex auditorium in Zapopan.
Caz’s response was not well received by the audience, who reacted with whistles, boos, and a unanimous “no.” Visibly annoyed, Eduin Caz confronted the audience, questioning whether the previous three hours of the show had been worthless because of the absence of the requested song. “So, was the show worth it? Were the three hours worth it for the panther? Or what? Don’t be too mean,” the singer expressed.
Days before this concert, Eduin Caz had announced via social media the group’s decision to stop performing “fictitious corridos” in their live performances. This decision was made following the controversy surrounding the Alegres del Barranco case and the growing ban on this musical genre by various state governments.
Despite this incident, Grupo Firme held their first scheduled concert at the Palenque de la Feria de San Marcos. The group has another concert planned in Mexico City, on June 28 at the GNP Stadium, where they are expected to maintain their stance of not performing corridos.
