The alleged “promise” Calderón’s sister made to “La Tuta”; this is what the leader of Los Caballeros Templarios said

Among the 26 Mexican criminals handed over to the United States on Tuesday, August 12, was Servando Gómez Martínez, known in the criminal world as La Tuta. He is the founder of Los Caballeros Templarios, who in his glory years was known for giving public interviews.

It is precisely thanks to these interviews that we can learn about the alleged relationship between the drug trafficker and former president Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, whose work he once praised, a positive rhetoric that eventually wore thin.

Among his statements, La Tuta mentioned on one occasion that Calderón’s sister contacted him through a public official in the state of Michoacán. Here’s what he said about Luisa María Calderón Hinojosa.

What did La Tuta say about the Hinojosa family?

In one of Servando Gómez Martínez’s videos, the drug trafficker denied the statements of then-Senator Luisa María Calderón Hinojosa, who had said there were politicians linked to the Knights Templar.

In this regard, La Tuta asserted that the only politician who approached him at the time was herself—Felipe Claderón’s sister—through a candidate for district deputy in Apatzingán named Francisco Javier Girón del Toro.

“The only person who approached us during the November 2011 campaign for the governorship of Michoacán was Mrs. Luisa María Calderón Hinojosa (…) She would respect us when she won and that we would go hand in hand,” the criminal leader stated. According to Gómez Martínez, Calderón’s sister sent del Toro to speak with the leaders of the criminal organization to assure them that if she won the state governorship, she would protect the Knights Templar.

“Personally, I was a little upset and clearly told Francisco Javier Girón del Toro that we had no relationship with any political party.”

However, after the La Tuta video became public, María Calderón Hinojosa herself denied that she sought out the criminal leader:

“It’s an affront to the Mexican State; it’s a video in reaction to the statements I’ve made about the presence of that group in this Senate, and which now requires an investigation. It’s also an open threat to me,” Calderón’s sister said at the time.
