Almost a decade has passed since Kate del Castillo became the protagonist of one of the most controversial chapters in the recent history of drug trafficking in Mexico. On October 2, 2015, the actress held a private meeting with Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, then leader of the Sinaloa Cartel and one of the world’s most wanted criminals.
That meeting, which took place in the mountains of Sinaloa under strict security measures, also included the participation of American actor Sean Penn, who would later publish an interview with Guzmán in Rolling Stone magazine.
Although the initial intention of the meeting was to discuss the possibility of making a film about the drug lord’s life, the encounter was interpreted by the Mexican public and authorities as a gesture of collaboration or, at least, sympathy toward the drug trafficker. The meeting sparked a media firestorm that put Del Castillo in the spotlight, and she has since faced legal proceedings, ethical questions, and professional cancellation.
In a recent interview with the program “Sale el Sol,” the actress spoke again about that episode and its consequences, amidst the promotion of her new film, “La más fan.”
