Ted Cruz Wants to ‘Invade’ Mexico with Marines; Mexican Authorities Reject

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs made it clear that security responsibilities within Mexico correspond “exclusively to the Mexican authorities” after U.S. Senator Ted Cruz called on President Claudia Sheinbaum to accept the military aid offered by his country to combat the cartels.

In an informational card responding to Cruz’s offer “as friends,” the Foreign Ministry recalled that a new security work program is being prepared based on the principles of “mutual trust.”

“Our Constitution and laws clearly establish that security responsibilities within our country correspond exclusively to the Mexican authorities.”

However, the federal government insisted that there is good cooperation based on the laws of each country and the international treaties adopted, “always with respect for sovereignty, which is inalienable.”

“In the discussions we have been holding with the State Department for several months regarding a new understanding for a security work program, the starting point is that binational cooperation must be based on the principles of shared responsibility, mutual trust, full respect for our sovereignty and territory, and cooperation without subordination, as clearly established by President Claudia Sheinbaum.”

According to the Foreign Ministry, this position was expressed directly by Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente to Senator Cruz, with whom he met at the Ministry’s headquarters this Friday morning.

After the meeting, in a press conference, the Republican senator from Texas said that Mexico should accept sending troops to combat the cartels and “it would be much preferable for it to be cooperative.

“My hope is that the Mexican government recognizes that defeating these cartels is very important so that its citizens do not live in fear.”

The US legislator revealed that he and De la Fuente discussed security, as both countries “have shared goals,” such as curbing drug and human trafficking.

In that sense, he considered these issues to be part of the success of US President Donald Trump’s administration in terms of border security.

He explained that in his meeting with the foreign minister, he discussed how to “build on that success to ensure we continue to stop illegal immigration and how we can do more to stop drug trafficking.”

He also emphasized that the cartels represent “transnational criminal organizations” and both countries must collaborate “to Protect citizens from their horrific violence.”

Cruz also alluded to economic ties as a way for the Sheinbaum administration to accept the United States’ military intervention, highlighting the shared history of Texas and Mexico.

“When we work together on security and improve the situation, that creates the opportunity for us to also do so on trade and achieve a victory that creates jobs on both sides,” he asserted.
