The US Embassy in Mexico issued a security alert for the thousands of American citizens planning to travel to the country during Spring Break 2026, warning of risks of violence, crime, and emergency situations in tourist destinations.
The alert comes after the violence that erupted on February 22, following the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, “El Mencho,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), and given the persistence of serious crimes such as homicide, kidnapping, and robbery in various Mexican regions, including areas popular with international tourists.
“Although the widespread violence that occurred on February 22 following Mexican security operations has ended, risks of crime and kidnapping remain,” the alert states.
The diplomatic mission recommended that travelers consult state-specific warnings before planning their visits and remain vigilant for dangers, even in the most crowded areas during the school break.
