An armed attack that occurred this Sunday at a soccer field in the community of Loma de Flores, in the municipality of Salamanca, Guanajuato, left a confirmed death toll of 11 people, while the number of wounded ranges between six and 12.

The events took place shortly before 5:30 p.m., when a soccer game was being played at the fields known as Campos de las Cabañas. According to initial reports, armed men arrived at the site in at least three pickup trucks and opened fire on those present, including minors.

Following the attack, the Guanajuato Attorney General’s Office confirmed the deaths of 11 people, 10 of whom died at the scene and one more while receiving medical attention.

The agency also reported six people injured by gunfire, who are currently receiving medical attention.

The municipality of Salamanca reported the same number of deaths; however, it also stated that 12 people were injured. The mayor of the municipality, César Prieto, specified that among the injured were a woman and a minor. Paramedics indicated that some were in serious condition.

The area, bordering Irapuato, was cordoned off by members of the National Defense Secretariat, the National Guard, and state and municipal security forces. Despite the operation deployed, no arrests had been reported as of last night.

At the scene, forensic experts recovered more than 100 spent shell casings from high-powered weapons.

Witnesses recounted that, amidst screams of panic, some people who were watching the game and were nearby managed to flee the scene to take refuge from the gunfire.

This marks the second consecutive day of violence in the municipality. Just last Saturday, six people were killed: five in the community of Cuarto de Altamira and one in San Vicente de Flores. The criminal group known as La Marriza claimed responsibility for the attack.
