Access to beaches should not be “limited to those with financial resources,” warned President Claudia Sheinbaum, after Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón announced the “conditions” for people to enjoy these spaces.
She described it as illegal for restaurateurs and hoteliers on Tulum’s beaches to maintain control over whether to allow or deny access, to the detriment of native people or tourists, regardless of their nationality.
The president stated in a press conference this Thursday that the Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, is already addressing the situation in Tulum, in response to what appears to be an attempt to privatize the beaches and reduce access through Jaguar Park.
“I asked the Secretary of Tourism to address the issue of Tulum, because one is what you’re saying, hoteliers who prevent access to the beaches, which is illegal, or who control access to the beaches, and the other is the issue of Jaguar Park, which protects the archaeological site but at the same time left a smaller space for access to the beaches,” Sheinbaum said.
