The recent arrest of Canadian former Olympic athlete Ryan Wedding was allegedly the result of another betrayal within the Sinaloa Cartel, supposedly orchestrated by Ismael Zambada Sicairos, alias “Mayito Flaco,” according to an investigation by journalist Anabel Hernández, published in the latest episode of her podcast, Narcosistema.
The capture of the so-called “Canadian Chapo,” which occurred on January 22, 2016, in Mexico City, sparked a debate about the true circumstances of the operation, given the conflicting accounts between the Mexican and U.S. governments regarding whether it was a voluntary surrender or a planned operation to apprehend him.
The U.S. government, represented by Attorney General Pam Bondi, asserted that Ryan Wedding’s arrest was carried out by agents of the Department of Justice under her command. Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection Omar García Harfuch stated that the former athlete surrendered voluntarily at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City.
According to the official account, pressure from authorities in both countries led Wedding to make the decision to turn himself in, a decision also supported by U.S. Ambassador Ronald Johnson.
