Iván Cano, a young Colombian man with a severe genetic condition, is about to be sentenced in Mexico after being accused of carrying weapons for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), although medical evidence and testimonies indicate that it would be physically impossible.
Originally from Villavicencio, the 25-year-old’s case has generated alarm among civil organizations. Diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, he remains incarcerated in a prison in Morelia, Michoacán, awaiting sentencing for the crime of possessing weapons for the exclusive use of the Army, a crime he faces after falling for a fraudulent job offer from the CJNG, the organization that recruited him.
The story begins in May 2025, when Cano received a job offer through an international website, Reinserta co-founder Saskia Niño de Rivera told Radio Fórmula.
The story begins in May 2025, when Cano received a job offer through an international website. After arriving in Cancún and then Guadalajara, he sent a final message to his mother: “Mom, I’m in Cancún, I’m okay.” From that moment on, all contact with him was lost.
Niño de Rivera reports that the young man was ultimately kidnapped as he left the Guadalajara airport by individuals who identified themselves as members of the CJNG cartel, who then took him to a ranch in the mountains, where he was held captive.
