The concept of the “Black Pope” has resurfaced amid speculations about the possible succession of Pope Francis, whose health has sparked uncertainty about the future of the papacy. Throughout history, this idea has been subject to various interpretations, from references to Jesuit leadership to apocalyptic prophecies.
Origin and meaning of the term
The term “Black Pope” has traditionally been associated with the Superior General of the Society of Jesus, so named because of the black attire of the Jesuits and their influence within the Church. Since Francis is the first Jesuit pope, some believe this prophecy was fulfilled with his election.
Another interpretation comes from the prophecies of Nostradamus, who supposedly predicted the arrival of a “Black Pope” following the death of an elderly pontiff. For some, this could refer to the election of an African cardinal as the next pope. Currently, there are 33 African cardinals eligible to vote in a future conclave, 23 of whom were appointed by Francis.
