Just hours after the reopening of the Nevado de Toluca Flora and Fauna Protection Area was announced, the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp) reversed itself and indefinitely closed access to this colossus.
The federal agency reported that “until the safety of visitors is guaranteed,” access to Nevado de Toluca will not be permitted. This comes after Conanp itself announced that starting this Saturday, October 18, it would reopen under a new tourist policy exclusively for hiking and mountaineering.
The most recent information announces the indefinite closure of this protected natural area in order to improve protocols and ensure that those seeking to spend time in this space do so under appropriate safety conditions, reducing risks and the environmental impact on the area.
It’s worth remembering that since August 10, 2025, federal and state authorities have closed access to Nevado de Toluca following a car accident involving a van used to transport people to this natural area, which left 11 people injured and one dead.
