A woman crossed the pedestrian crossing at the downtown border crossing, intending to cross from Mexico into the United States with a baby in her arms who no longer showed vital signs. The incident occurred last Tuesday, September 30, at the border between Mexicali and Calexico.
According to a report from the Command, Control, Computing, Communications, and Citizen Contact Center, Mexican authorities received an alert about a woman who had crossed into the United States carrying an apparently lifeless infant. Upon arriving at the scene, it was confirmed that Calexico firefighters treated the mother and child, declaring the baby, who was approximately two months old, dead.
The woman was identified as Garette Esperanza “N,” 25, and was provisionally detained by U.S. authorities after crossing with the deceased child. In her initial statements, the woman offered contradictory and confusing versions of what happened.
